Packaging for the Planet: How FSC® Certified Packaging Can Help Make a Difference on Earth Day

Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day is celebrated. Originally starting in 1970, Earth Day is a global movement that encourages action for a cleaner environment. This year’s campaign looks to encourage everyone to act boldly, innovate and implement appropriate actions that will protect the planet. It is now more important than ever for businesses to adopt sustainable practices as consumers start to value sustainable and ethical initiatives in the buyer’s journey.

In a recent study, it was found that consumers’ most important practice was whether a brand produced sustainable packaging and products. FSC® certified packaging is a perfect example that will not only improve your brand’s reputation but will also bring environmental benefits that meet Earth Day’s mission.

What Is Sustainable Packaging?

Sustainable packaging is packaging that is designed with the environment in mind. It considers the lifecycle of a product from manufacturing to disposal to minimise any impact on the environment. It is therefore a safer option for the environment as it tries to eliminate toxic materials and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere.

At Garthwest, we encourage the use of eco-friendly packaging across all our products and services and make sure that our raw material is only sourced from like-minded suppliers. This is why all our packaging is cardboard, which is widely known as a biodegradable, recyclable and environmentally friendly packaging

What Is FSC® Packaging?

To make your cardboard packaging even more eco-friendly, companies should look towards securing FSC® packaging. Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is a global organisation that promotes responsible management and use of the world’s forests. This non-profit organisation provides a labelling system which allows organisations and their customers to identify which products (e.g., cardboard/paper) have originated from a sustainable forest.

At Garthwest, we provide three types of FSC® labelled cardboard packaging:

  1. FSC 100% – This is the highest distinction for FSC-certified products. All materials are sourced from forests which are strictly audited by independent parties to confirm they are meeting FSC’s social and environmental standards.
  2. FSC Recycled – the product is sourced from 100% recycled content. This helps reduce the pressure of deforestation and the demand for natural resources.
  3. FSC Mix – the product is made from a mixture of materials. This includes recycled materials, FSC-certified forests and/or FSC-controlled wood.

Each label ensures you are choosing sustainably sourced packaging and highlights your commitment to sustainability and responsible environmental protection. If you are interested in sourcing either FSC 100%, FSC Recycled or FSC Mix cardboard packaging, contact us today.

Environmental Benefits of FSC® Packaging

Since we’re celebrating Earth Day, it is worth knowing the excellent environmental benefits of FSC® packaging.

Protects forests: FSC-certified packaging supports responsible forest management practices that protect forests from deforestation and degradation. As a result, this enhances the biodiversity, ecological functions and natural resources of a forest.

Promotes sustainability: With responsible forest management in place, trees are replanted or regenerated after harvest. This helps maintain the long-term productivity and health of forests, ensuring they can continue to provide for future generations.

Reduces waste: Each FSC label is either fully or partially made from recycled or biodegradable materials, which can help reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of packaging.
